Why we didn’t include some companies on our vegan dog food maker list
You might notice that some dog food manufacturers are missing from this list, even though you’ve heard that they make vegan dog food. We researched many manufacturers, and only included them if they made at least one nutritionally complete dog food product that was completely vegan. Here’s why we excluded other manufacturers:
- Compassion Circle VegeDog: They mainly make supplements, so we don’t consider these foods to be nutritionally complete by themselves.
- Dr Harvey’s: They do make some vegan dog food products, but all of these require you to add your own protein, typically meat. This means we don’t consider them to be vegan once the protein is added, or nutritionally complete without the protein.
- Evanger’s: They do make some vegetarian products, but these do contain animal products and byproducts.
- Freely: They do make some vegetarian products, but these do contain animal products and byproducts.
- The Honest Kitchen: They do make some vegan dog food products, but all of these require you to add your own protein, typically meat. This means we don’t consider them to be vegan once the protein is added, or nutritionally complete without the protein.
- Ketunpet: We couldn’t find their website and they don’t appear to be in business any more.
- Lukullus: We couldn’t find their website and we’re not sure if they’re in business any more.
- The Missing Link: They mainly make supplements, so we don’t consider these foods to be nutritionally complete by themselves.
- Mrs. Plant: This is an individual making vegan recipes, including dog food, so she’s not a commercial manufacturer. You should still check her out, though!
- Nature’s Recipe: According to an answer from the manufacturer on Amazon, their recipe for Healthy Skin Vegetarian food is only consistent with a vegetarian diet, not a vegan diet.
- PetGuard: We couldn’t find their website and they don’t appear to be in business any more.
- Royal Canin: Their meat-free kibble is only available through a prescription from a veterinarian.
- Sojos: They do make some vegan dog food products, but all of these require you to add your own protein, typically meat. This means we don’t consider them to be vegan once the protein is added, or nutritionally complete without the protein.
- Whimzees: They mainly make dental chews, so we don’t consider these foods to be nutritionally complete by themselves.
- Veggiedog: The D3 in their vegetarian formula comes from an animal source, so we don’t consider the food to be completely vegan.
- Yarrah: The D3 in their vegetarian formula comes from an animal source, so we don’t consider the food to be completely vegan.
We also excluded many major pet brands like Iams, Purina, Blue Buffalo, and others as they do not make any vegan dog food products.
If you think we’ve excluded companies by mistake, or you think there are other companies we should add, please let us know.
